Joseph A. Valerio is an attorney with experience in big law firms, the federal government, and most recently, legal artificial intelligence (AI). Leveraging his expertise in legal, technology, and communication skills, he is currently a Legal Engineer, Product Specialist at Harvey, where he trains law firms and in-house clients on how to integrate Harvey’s AI platform into their practices and how to use AI to engage in effective and accurate legal analysis.
Joe began his legal career at Willkie Farr & Gallagher LLP in the firm’s Corporate and Financial Services department, working on all aspects of M&A, capital markets, and corporate governance matters. He subsequently joined Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP, where he expanded his capital markets practice, focusing on securities and corporate governance transactions. Returning to D.C. and his interest in administrative law and policy, Joe took an opportunity to join the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission as an attorney in the Office of the General Counsel, Legal Policy, where he advised on the legality of the Commission’s rulemaking and policy matters. Upon administrative changes, Joe returned to private practice at McDermott, Will & Schulte (formerly Schulte Roth & Zabel LLP), where he advised public and private companies on capital markets and corporate governance matters.
A native of Brooklyn, New York, Joe attended the Macaulay Honors College program at Brooklyn College and received his B.A. in Political Science and Psychology. He received his J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center. Joe is admitted to practice in New York and the District of Columbia.
Joe is committed to mentoring. He has volunteered with various programs, such as the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s Women’s Committee Mentor Program, the Macaulay Honors College Alumni Mentorship Program, and the Children’s Defense Fund’s Beat the Odds Alumni Program. He enjoys meeting and supporting early-career professionals and fellow attorneys to support them through various career transitions and to promote wellness in the legal profession.
