Judge Frances Y. Wang was first appointed as an Interim Civil Court Judge in December 2016, and was assigned to serve in Bronx Criminal Court. She is the first Taiwanese to be appointed by a Mayor to sit in New York City Criminal Court. In December 2017, Judge Wang was appointed as a Criminal Court Judge, and had been serving in Bronx Criminal Court until January, 2021. Thereafter, Judge Wang was transferred to Queens Criminal Court. In December, 2021, she was promoted to sit in Queens Supreme Court, Criminal Term as an Acting Justice. In November, 2025, Judge Wang was elected as Justice of Supreme Court, Queens County. She presides in a hearing and trial part.
Justice Wang graduated magna cum laude from St. John’s University, and received her J.D. from Hofstra University School of Law. Upon graduating from law school, she served as an Assistant District Attorney in the Bronx. She spent two years in Criminal Court Bureau, where she prosecuted misdemeanor cases. Justice Wang spent the next six years in Appeals Bureau, where she argued before the Appellate Term, Appellate Division, New York Court of Appeals and District Court in the Southern District. Prior to her appointment as a judge, Justice Wang was a Principal Court Attorney in Supreme Court, Criminal Term, Bronx County for six years.
Justice Wang was President of the Bronx District Attorney’s Alumni Association and Secretary of the Asian American Judges Association of New York (“AAJANY”). She is currently the Vice- President of AAJANY, an organization committed to promoting legal advancement and providing support within the Asian community. She serves as Co-Chair of various sub-committees of the Equal Justice Committee of Queens Supreme Court, Criminal Term. She co-chaired the 11th Judicial District’s inaugural Asian American Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander heritage month celebration. Justice Wang is the Chair of the summer internship program for high school, college and law school students at Queens Supreme Court. She has helped shape and lead a program that provides students with meaningful exposure to the justice system. She has developed a comprehensive, hands-on educational program that offers students direct exposure to courtrooms, judges and stakeholders. Justice Wang also lectures new judges at the New York State Judicial Institute. She currently co-chairs the New York State Unified Court System’s Working Group on Anti-Asian Hate.
Justice Wang has been honored by the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in New York and the Asian American Bar Association of New York for her contributions to the legal community. In May, 2024, she was honored as Person of the Year by the Society of Asian Federal Officers.
Justice Wang has served on various panels to discuss the pathway to the bench. She has been a guest speaker at St. John’s University School of Law and Harvard Law School. Justice Wang has also devoted her time to serving different communities in various capacities. She has served as a volunteer judge at intercollegiate mock trial competitions in various states. She also volunteered as an assistant coach of St. John’s University’s Mock Trial team for seven years. Justice Wang had been a volunteer coach for a Catholic Youth Organization’s volleyball team in Queens.
